What if I told you that creating art specifically mandals can help you find calm in this chaotic world. I started my journey of creating mandals about 12 years ago. It was though art that I discovered how uneasy I was, I couldn’t focus for more than five minutes!
Having shorter drawing sessions helped me learn how to be mindful of my art process. I was able to eventually extend my time that I wanted to create, and now I have to be careful I don’t spend hours creating 🙂 In this post I will talk a little about mandalas and provide a free mandala practice sheet to help you get started.

Benefits of Mindful Art
The nature of drawing creative patterns or filling in your mandala can promote relaxation and reduce stress. As you focus on drawing each stroke you naturally will become more aware of the present moment.
The freedom of drawing whatever patterns and shapes you want will allow yourself to express yourself. Drawing patterns allows you to focus on the details which does not leave room for intrusive or anxiety provoking thoughts.
Reflection
Whether you realize it or not creating mandalas can serve as a mirror to what you are feeling. Mandalas can serve a great way to self-reflect. You might come to find out that you like certain colors, or you might gravitate towards certain shapes and patterns that help you become more relaxed.
Getting Started
- Step 1 Materials
Paper– Any paper will do, if you want to add some watercolors to your art piece, I recommend purchasing some watercolor paper.
Pens and Pencils- Using a pencil to sketch out your mandala and patterns will be helpful in case you need to fix any mistakes. You then can outline it with a pen.
- Step 2 Circle
Start by creating a circle, you can draw one free hand or use a protractor.
- Step 3 Shapes and Patterns
You then can add the designs inside your circle. They can be anything from leaves, petals or geometric shapes, your intuition will guide you.
- Step 4 Colors
This step is about creative expression, use colors that feel good to you or evoke feeling. Play around with color combinations and gradients.
